In the season of giving, it is nice to be able to able to give something that not only helps the receiver but also the person who made the gift and also maybe a charity that is close to the recipient’s heart.
I recently came across a company that is doing what so many strive to do – create a successful business while making a difference. This company was started by two guys from California and has grown to a hugely popular brand.
Pura Vida is not only a fair trade company that provides sustainable and ethical conditions for its artisans but they also have a hugely popular charity line that donates proceeds to different causes.
If you are not familiar with Pura Vida Bracelets, they are one of the trendiest jewelry companies out there and in my opinion, what really sets them apart is their story: two friends on vacation in Costa Rica noticed local artisans selling beautiful handcrafted bracelets. They took some back to the States, sold out almost immediately and the seed for Pura Vida was born.
The company now provides full-time jobs to over 150 artisans worldwide and pays them a fair wage in good conditions.
Pura Vida has partnered with over 190 charities that fight for causes such form Alzeimers to Colon Cancer and environmental efforts. Each charity has it’s own uniquely designed bracelet that can be worn alone or stacked with others.
10% of the proceeds of each charity bracelet goes directly to the charity in question making it a great gift to give back this year and make a different.
As I write about babies and infertility, I was happy to see that Pura Vida has some bracelets that support baby related charities such as congenital heart disease. You can see the full charity collection here.
Proceeds from the baby loss awareness bracelet go to Gifts from Grayson which is a charity that makes and donates memory boxes for parents of stillborn babies and parents of babies in the NICU.
10% of the proceeds of this bracelet go to The Kinship Center. This is a California-based nonprofit agency that creates and supports permanent families for children through adoption, relative care-giving or other guardianship.
This bracelet supports the Tiny Feet Foundation whose goal is to help families not worry about the small things and allow them to focus on their child fighting for their life under the care of the Neonatal Unit. They compile care packages that include gas cards, housing vouchers, food vouchers, and other necessary items required to support families who are putting their lives on hold to be with their little one in the intensive care nursery.
If you have an idea for a bracelet or run a charity, you can submit a proposal for a bracelet through the website which I think is a great idea. Pura Vida also has a fundraising section where you can design your own bracelet to sell at your charity or community event.
If you are looking for a unique gift this Christmas, Pura Vida is a great idea as you can be confident that you are not only giving a beautiful present to someone but you are helping out local communities and charities at the same time.
