Summer is an awesome time for kids and it’s great to spend family time doing fun summer activities and soaking up the rays but it’s easy to get overheated and risk sun stroke or sunburn if you aren’t careful.

Summertime can be so much fun. It is finally time to be poolside. It also comes with its own challenges.

Where I live, triple digits are an everyday occurrence beginning in July. It is not only weather-enforced torture, but it also poses a severe health risk for young children.
6 Tips To Stay Safe In The Sun This Summer
1.Plan destinations that include water
Pools and splash pads are a great way to cool down in the summer. Just remember water safety and that littles have to be watched constantly because they are, shall we say, unpredictable. That is the nicer way to say that they are crazy and you never know what they are going to do.
These are definitely not the best times for parents to socialize, but it is nice to have at least one other adult around just in case.
2. Stay indoors
Yes, you may just have to suck it up and stay inside with your little. Any SAHP knows that keeping children indoors is the equivalent of a full moon. But, after being forced into the cabin-fever scenario, I realized there is a myriad of entertainment options at home.
It is a great opportunity to read books and play games. Flex your artistic skills and join in with some art creation. Play with Legos, cars, and play dough. Cook meals and clean together.
It may take longer, but these are meaningful life skills you are teaching your child. If all else fails, watch a movie together in the afternoon. Screen time may not be the best option, but I feel it is a completely different experience when it is bonding time snuggled on the couch rather than a tool for distraction (which is also totally necessary at times).
There are also many indoor places that are fun. The mall play places are great and free for children under 5. There are also inexpensive options of indoor playgrounds. Do a quick google search or ask friends.
Many theaters have $1 showings of classic movies – you know, the ones you like best anyway. And my favorite free indoor activity is the library. Puppet shows and classes are wonderful and there is often a play area for small children, video games and computers for older kids and a magical world of books.
3. Sunscreen up. Sunscreen is vital for healthy skin.
In the 70s and 80s, people laid out with the intent on getting tanned. Nowadays, we have a lot more knowledge about skin cancer. Plus, as a parent, your likelihood of getting to lay down and relax is about as likely as a unicorn pooping rainbows.
Anyway, besides the obvious fact that you don’t want yourself or child to be in excruciating pain and looking like a lobster, it really is dangerous to be exposed to the sun without protection. Slap on the 30spf or higher for everyone being exposed prior to going out. Read the label. Oh, and take the reapplication part seriously. Especially when you are sweating and getting in the water. I am taking recommendations for sunscreens if you have a favorite.
4. Take advantage of fresh fruits in season.
Finally, our berry budget won’t bust the bank. My son would devour about 2-3 cartons of blueberries in one sitting if he had the opportunity. With his berry habit, we are shelling out mad dough during the cooler seasons. I also find seasonal summer food to be light and refreshing, probably a good call for anyone trying to squeeze into a swimsuit post-children.

5. Stay hydrated.
This sounds obvious, but it is easy to lose track and not get enough water. Buy plenty of reusable water bottles and freeze a few the day before. If all else fails, buy water. I am so frugal and I can’t believe I am saying this, but even at the exorbitant prices of amusement parks and theaters, it is better to take the financial hit than risk dehydration.

6. Plan the day out accordingly.
I may not like my schedule to be dictated by the weather, but if it is over 100, it’s just not worth it. Even temperatures above 90 can be too hot for little ones. We try to do outdoor activities in the morning. In the afternoons, we stay inside.

Oh summer, how I love the sun’s rays beating down
Making my skin so lovely and brown.
The freedom from school and all that entails
Kids running free with their buckets and pails.
The water is refreshing and cool
And everyone I know can be found at the pool
The grass is actually greener
And the vitamin D improves my demeanor

Yes, it is still sunny and bright
Even though it is well into night
The tan was nice while it stayed
But now I am red and almost flambeau’d
The sun is punishing and severe
