Soda And Fertility – What You Need To Know

Most of us know that soda isn’t exactly amazing for our health, let alone our fertility. If you are trying to improve your eating habits and improve your fertility, one of the things you should do is eat more whole foods, drink more water and less sugary stuff like soda.

You know that soda can be dangerous for your health in general.  However, did you know that it can also affect your fertility?

Before you reach for another can of soda or another bottle of pop, consider the new research on its health impact.

Soda can do more than add pounds to your frame. It can hurt your fertility and also affect a man’s sperm count.

Fertility and Soda – The Facts

A new study by the Boston University School Of Public Health found that just one or two sodas a day can affect your chances of getting pregnant.

The Pregnancy Study Online (PRESTO), surveyed 3,828 women aged 21 to 45 living in the United States or Canada and 1,045 of their male partners.

Your average chances of getting pregnant in any one month is 20%.

The study found that females who consumed at least one soda per day had 25 percent lower fecundability and male consumption was associated with 33 percent lower fecundability.

This means that drinking soda can affect your fertility.

Likely soda and other sugary drinks affect your egg quality which can make it harder to have a pregnancy and sustain it.

The study also noted that energy drinks seem to hurt fertility even more, perhaps because of the high caffeine content so avoid those while trying to conceive.

Does Diet Soda Affect Fertility?

Strangely enough, the studies on soda and fertility have not seen the same results with diet soda.

The theory behind this would probably be the same as the The Fertility Diet which emphasizes low carb (sugar) and higher protein to improve egg quality and pregnancy rates.

That being said, there is zero nutritional value in diet soda drinks and pregnancy women are warned against using sweeteners due to a marked increase in childhood obesity.

Soda and Male Sperm Count

Does coke reduce sperm count?

The bottom line is yes, Coca Cola and other sodas are not optimal for sperm health.

A study from Denmark  examined 2,554 men at or around the age of 18 to determine their fitness for military service during the period of 2001–2005. The study clearly showed that their fertility was inversely related to the amount of soft drinks they consumed.

Other factors may influence this study including the fact that many people who drink high amounts of soda also eat proportionally more junk food.

How To Quit Soda

If you’re worried about the health impact of soda, it’s time to change. It’s not easy to stop drinking soda because research shows that sugar is addictive.

The first thing to realize is that you shouldn’t use diet soda as a stepping stone instead of quitting cold turkey. You are just exchanging one poison for another when it comes to your fertility.

Consider cutting out all sugary drinks and not just soda.  That includes seemingly innocent things like the sweet tea you’re enjoying or the fancy coffee drink but, it could also be your favourite juice beverage.

Look at the labels and figure out how many teaspoons of sugar you’re drinking each day. Then cut them out. Stick to water, black coffee and herbal tea for a few days. It’s not an easy transition, but it will be well worth it in the end.

Be prepared. Realize that soda withdrawal is real. You’ll crave this sugary drink and go out of your way to get it. However, you can take steps to reduce withdrawal and make it less likely that you’ll cheat.

To begin the quitting process, start reducing the amount of soda you drink each day. You can cut it down by one drink at a time. Replace that drink with something healthier like water.

Soda is a hard habit to break, but it’s important to be aware of what it’s doing to your body. It can negatively affect your fertility. It can also impact your health in other serious ways. Start reducing the soda in your diet today. Your body will thank you!
