How Do Toxins Affect Fertility?
According to the European Environment Agency, there are 70,000 to 100,000 chemicals in global commerce; approximately 4,800 “high-production volume chemicals” constitute the vast majority in global production.
According to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), toxins cause many health problems including:
- Miscarriage and still birth
- impaired fetal growth
- congenital malformations, impaired or reduced neurodevelopment and cognitive function
- an increase in cancer, attention problems
- ADHD behaviours, and hyperactivity
On the fertility side of things, chemicals in our environment also cause problems with sperm count and motility and menstrual cycle issues in women.
The problem is that there are so many endocrine disrupting chemicals in our work places, homes, food, air and water that is is almost impossible to avoid them.
Our body’s natural means of eliminating these chemicals is not enough to completely clear the body from all the toxins that we are bombarded with every day.
This table from Fairhaven Health gives you information about where chemicals lurk in everyday life:
How many chemicals are in your body?
To find out how many chemicals you are exposed to on a regular basis, you can take this eye-opening quiz from The New York Times.
Here are my results (and I use mainly natural products, avoid touching grocery receipts and lots of things that many people don’t do!)
What is a Fertility Detox?
A detox is aimed at helping the digestive system to work more efficiently by getting rid of toxins. It can also help to restore to balance your hormones.
Toxins in a fat soluble state are difficult for the body to eliminate in their natural state. A detox can help the liver to convert toxins so that the body can eliminate them via urine, faeces or sweat. A build-up of toxins may affect fertility.
Using herbs for a fertility cleanse can help your body to absorb nutrients better which is one of the reasons it is useful for fertility.
Fertility detoxing or cleansing is a popular natural fertility treatment.
Herbal concoctions are used to flush out the heavy metals, toxins, and inflammation that have accumulated in the body—factors that may lead to infertility.
Different Kinds of Fertility Detox
You don’t need to do something drastic like a colon cleanse to detox your body. In fact, if you are trying to get pregnant, you probably want to do a slightly more gentle version of detoxing to avoid shocking your body.
A simple fertility cleanse involves resetting your eating habits and starting a regime of Fertility Vitamins & Supplements.
A 3 month change to your diet such as using The Fertility Diet, can help your body to improve digestion and increase your egg quality and fertility naturally.
Natural Ways To Reduce Your Chemical Exposure
1. Eat organic
2. Use a glass or stainless steel water bottle.
3. Skip the fragrance – phthalates are used to suspend smell in beauty products
4. Be careful with nail polish as it can leech through your nails. Look for natural brands or avoid altogether.
5. Go “green” with your cleaning and gardening products. For example, here is a great recipe for natural, toxin free laundry detergent.
6. Avoid cash register receipts – the plastic film that makes them slippery is a source of BPA.
7. Choose natural beauty products that are free of parabens and phthalates. Better yet, make your own using essential oils that can boost for fertility.
8. Try not to eat canned foods with liners containing BPA

When Should You Do A Fertility Detox?
The ideal time to start a detox would be 3-6 months before trying to conceive so that your body has a chance to clear out the toxins in a full egg cycle.
Detoxing your body of chemical toxins can help your baby after you get pregnant and also improve your chances of a healthy pregnancy.
If you are in the middle of a treatment cycle, I would not start a fertility detox until you start a new cycle if you are not pregnant.
Likewise, you do not want to do anything drastic within 6 weeks of getting pregnant. Heavy metal cleanses and intense detoxes can release a lot of toxins (normally good thing! ). You don’t want your baby to be exposed to these toxins so early in their development.
