10 Magical Leprechaun Visit Ideas for St. Patrick’s Day

Since my kids were tiny, we have staged a fun leprechaun visit every St Patrick’s day.

Although it wasn’t a tradition of mine growing up, it’s become one of our favorite times of year and it perfectly bridges the gap between the holidays and Easter.

You don’t have to have Irish heritage to get in on the St Patrick’s Day craic, embrace the day as your own and celebrate everything green and Irish with your kids!

What’s The Deal With Leprechaun Visits?

In our house, Roy G Biv, the naughty leprechaun visits our house during the night of the 16 March into the 17th March.

When the kids wake up in the morning, they find a bunch of gold coins around the house that they can run around and collect.

We always read a St Patrick’s Day book about Roy G Bov the night before the big event to get us in the mood.

To make it even more fun, we add a few of the traditions to the visit:

Tiny Green Footprints

Use washable green paint or a green marker to create little leprechaun footprints around the house.

Place them leading from the front door to a surprise treat or around a leprechaun trap!

Leprechaun Trap Surprise

Have your kids set up a leprechaun trap the night before, and in the morning, let them find gold coins, green glitter, or a cheeky “better luck next time!” note left behind by the tricky leprechaun.

Green Water

In our house, Roy G Biv is a naughty leprechaun who runs around the house without flushing the toilet!

Add a few drops of green food coloring to the toilet bowl for a fun surprise that makes kids think a leprechaun has been up to mischief.

Topsy-Turvy Room

Flip chairs upside down, turn picture frames sideways, and switch shoes to the wrong feet.

The leprechaun’s playful antics will have everyone giggling at the silly mess.

Gold Coin Hunt

Hide chocolate  or plastic gold coins around the house for kids to discover.

We normally leave an empty pot of gold or a leprechaun hat outside their bedroom doors so they can collect the coins.

Rainbow Breakfast

Surprise your family with a colorful breakfast featuring rainbow pancakes, Lucky Charms cereal, or a green smoothie made by the mischievous leprechaun.

When my kids were babies, we did green pancakes with spinach to make them toddler friendly.

Silly Messages

Our leprechaun always leaves a funny message using our magnetic letters on the fridge.

You could also use a dry-erase marker to write on mirrors, such as “Catch me if you can!” or “Top of the morning to ya!”

Miniature Leprechaun Door

Set up a tiny door against the wall or baseboard to make it look like the leprechaun has a magical entrance to your home.

Upside-Down Clothes

Swap pajamas for inside-out clothes, turn socks backward, or leave a pile of mismatched outfits for a morning laugh at the leprechaun’s fashion tricks.

Lucky Gift

Our leprechaun leaves a bigger present at the end of the coin hunt – the catch – it is always in a crazy place such as the dishwasher or washing machine.

We try and find a rainbow themed presents such as a bath bomb or candy skewer.
