Twenty years ago, the Spice girls brought the girl power movement mainstream but nowadays, empowering little girls and instilling them with the confidence that they can do anything means so much more.
Although we have come a long way in realizing that both boys and girls be anything they want, stereotypes still exist and the #metoo movement this year has been a great reminder that we still have work to do.

Gift Power Gifts: Books For Empowering Girls
I love this book because it features girls of all races and personalities. The jobs range from “O” for optometrist to “N” for neurosurgeon.
Best for: Ages 2-5
Ten wide-eyed women trailblazers, from Ada Lovelace to Maria Tallchief, are presented in this rhyming book that makes a great baby shower gift.
Best for: Ages 0-5
This book is a new release (Nov 1 2018). It’s by Usborne who always makes great books for kids and I expect this one to be no exception.
Best for: Ages 5+
Girl Power Gifts: Games and activities
This book is really cute – there are 22 coloring pages, each with an affirmation ” I am powerful”, “I am sincere” etc. The pictures are great and the quality is very good. This would make a great stocking-filler for any girl.
Best for: Ages 4+
I love this activity book which comes with postcards, writing prompts and over 200 stickers while teaching girls about famous women in history such as Jane Austen, Frida Kahlo and Rosa Parks.
Best for: Ages 7+
Featuring women such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Helen Keller and Joan of Arc, these cute wooden blocks have a picture and a fun fact and quote from each “woman who dared”.
Best for: Ages 0+
This puzzle gets great reviews and includes artists, pioneers, leaders and activists. The puzzle has 500 pieces so it is more suitable for older girls but there are also matching playing cards and a board box set.
Best for: Ages 8+
I really like this book for starting conversations about activities kids like to do or things they would like to try (skiing, canoeing etc). The book is divided into sections with stickers for each one – at the beach, in the mountains etc
Best for: Ages 4+
This book includes 16 dolls depicting such notable African-American women as Phillis Wheatley, an early American poet; Sojourner Truth, preacher and abolitionist; educator Mary McLeod Bethune; tennis player Althea Gibson and Rosa Parks
Best for: Age 3+
These puzzles are awesome! They are 3D wooden puzzles of things such as “Florence’s Nightingale’s lamp” or Cleopatra’s pyramid.
