Using essential oils for fertility is a great way to boost your chances of getting pregnant naturally. For centuries people have used oils such as frankincense for fertility related conditions and to increase their reproductive health.
Different essential oils can be used to improve PCOS symptoms, egg quality and to balance your hormones , all of which can be contributing factors to infertility problems.
Men can also increase their fertility naturally by using specific essential oils that may help testosterone levels and sperm count.
One of the best essential oils for all-round fertility is Frankincense oil.
For many of us, Frankincense oil is mentioned in the Bible but we don’t know much more about it. You may be surprised, therefore, that it one of the must-have oils to have in your fertility tool-kit.

If you are in a hurry…
Frankincense oil is good for fertility because it:
- Regulates hormones
- Encourages a regular cycle
- Tones the uterus
What is Frankincense Oil?
The name frankincense is from the ancient French term “franc enens” meaning “pure incense”. It is extracted from the gum or resin of the Boswellia tree.
The tree grows in dry areas of the Middle East, Africa and parts of India.
Most of the Frankincense we use today comes from the Yemen or Oman.
Various civilizations including the Ancient Egyptians have burned Frankincense incense and used the oil for health and wellness benefits.
It has been used in Ayuvedic medicine for hundreds of years.
Frankincense has a woody, spicy smell that makes it pleasant and easy to use in a variety of ways.
The Benefits Of Frankincense Oil
Unlike some other essential oils, Frankincense has been widely studied and many of its health benefits have been proven for years.

(SIDE NOTE: spearmint oil can also improve PCOS symptoms).

To apply – Rub a few drops of frankincense onto your feet before bed. Cover your feet with socks to allow the oil to really penetrate into your skin while you sleep.
How do you use frankincense oil for fibroids?
Fibroids are a major cause of infertility in many women. They are non-cancerous tumors in the uterus that can make getting pregnant very difficult.
If you suffer from uterine fibroids, you may find that frankincense oil used as part of or on its own can help to shrink your fibroids.
As well as the ideas above such as using a diffuser and creating a blend of oils, you can also try adding a few drops of frankincense oil into a warm bath to reduce your fibroids (this also works to reduce ovarian cysts caused by excessive estrogen levels).
You can also try massaging a few drops of frankincense oil directly onto your tummy a few times a week in order to help shrink your fibroids.
Can I take frankincense oil orally?
Yes! Not only can frankincense can be ingested – it is actually really good for your oral health!
People often chew the gum from the Boswellia tree to freshen their breath and strengthen their teeth.
You can add a drop or two of frankincense oil to a glass of water as a way to take it internally or place a drop under your tongue.
Where to buy Frankincense Oil
You can buy frankincense oil at most health food stores but I have found that Amazon has the greatest variety of oils at great prices.
Frankincense is pretty expensive but it is important to buy a quality, pure oil in order to make sure you are receiving the maximum fertility benefits.
Why is frankincense oil so expensive?
As I mentioned before, frankincense oil is extracted from the resin of the Boswellia tree, found in only a few regions on Earth.
This makes it a precious oil and unfortunately means that it not cheap.
To obtain the resin needed to make frankincense oil, harvesters make scrapes in the trunk of the tree. They then collect the dried resin gums from the trees at a later date.
Trees only produce good-quality resin for about 2-3 years.
The quality of the resin decreases after that to the point where the tree needs to rest for several years before harvesting can resume.
This means that it is hard to produce frankincense oil in huge quantities. As its popularity for various health conditions has grown, the price has remained high.
Luckily a few drops go a long way in a diffuser or oil blend.

Another bestseller, this oil is USDA certified organic.

Can I use Frankincense oil once I get pregnant?
There is evidence that essential oils can cross the placenta so I advise against using frankincense oil once you get your positive pregnancy test.
If you are worried about this, the best thing to do is to avoid using frankincense (or any essential oil) from ovulation until CD1 of your cycle. That way if you are pregnant, you know that you have not used any oils at all.
While many essential oils are safe for pregnancy, it is wise to either avoid using them or consult a medical professional.
You should also speak to your doctor before using any essential oils while breastfeeding as they can enter your milk supply too.
